My name is EJ.
Which is not strictly true actually, my given name is Emily but I have gone by EJ for more than a decade. Somewhere around the time I made the switch to EJ, I also began changing how I interacted with the world. Visual communiqué became my preferred flavor of interface, and I have sought to create and share genuine experiences with others through my work in photography and art. Having been raised to question everything and make up my own mind about the world, my work is a reflection of this mindset being somewhat obscure and not particularly themed in one way or another. This allows those that view my work to deduce meaning that is significant and personal to the individual. I hope to create a sensory experience that is more than just visual when one observes my work, and this goal was highly influenced by my study of synesthesia. Synesthesia is the production of a sense impression relating to one sense or part of the body by stimulation of another sense or part of the body. The content of my images stems from a desire to connect with those around me in a meaningful way, and personally that connection is made visually. When someone observes my work there is a transference of intention or purpose from me as the creator to the viewer, and by the act of them seeing a piece and responding to it gives this intention purpose. It is a non-verbal sort of interaction that provides for me an outlet to express and be understood by proxy through my work. Photographing the world around me allows for a tangible view of what my position in life looks like, to both myself and others. What is more desirable than being seen, really seen, by your own self and by others? That intention is the backbone of why I do what I do. I want to be seen, and I want to see other people, and for them to see themselves by way of my skill-set. I believe that life is a series of moments that impact our existence, and to be able to revisit the image of one of those moments is to integrate the past with our present selves for a more purposeful and intentional way of being.
